| Regulatory
Animal Care
- Medical research that uses animals to ensure the safety and
effectiveness of new drugs and treatments is required by law and is
highly regulated by the federal U.S. Department of Agriculture and Food
& Drug Administration.
- Both of these agencies conduct regular on-site
inspections of our facilities. They thoroughly review our practices,
procedures, the condition of our animals, and extensive internal
documentation of our activities. Covance facilities are subject to
frequent unannounced government inspections and are also regularly
inspected by company clients.
- Animal research will be essential to achieving future
progress in health care. To solve some of our most threatening health
problems, scientists and researchers will need access to information
and data that are specific to the disease or medication being studied.
- We meet or exceed all established standards for the care
and housing of research animals, and we are committed to eliminating or
minimizing possible pain and distress to laboratory animals during
research.
- Covance maintains Institutional Animal Care and Use
Committees (IACUC) to review each research study protocol to ensure the humane
care and use of laboratory animals. The committees are composed of
veterinarians, technical personnel, management and others.
- Covance's North American early development laboratories are accredited by the
Association for the Assessment and Accreditation for Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC), the
leading independent agency overseeing animal care.
