Covance Protests May Be Backfiring
Edythe Jensen
The Arizona Republic
January 11, 2007
Arizona Republic (Phoenix), January 11 — Controversy over Covance's plans to build in Chandler may be working in the city's favor and backfiring on the protesters. Valley bioscience and economic development experts say city leaders' calm but firm response to anti-Covance protests has enhanced their image with the biotech industry and is bringing even more business interest to the community.

"...At the very moment when Arizona is making its bid to become a major hub of biomedical
research and development in the United States, PETA's misguided crusade against Covance comes
as an unwelcome sour note. If Chandler, which is poised to reap many of the benefits of the
biomed boom, caves to the demands of this extremist group, the negative ripple effect could be
devastating throughout the Valley and the state."

"Covance saves lives by conducting important animal research. The company has worked to advance
therapies for breast cancer, Alzheimer's, diabetes and heart disease. These are conditions that too
often impact seniors' quality of life, and the research conducted at a Covance facility in Chandler
could one day help alleviate their pain. ... Companies like Covance must be given the opportunity to
expand and innovate in Chandler and elsewhere throughout the country. The work these companies do
is critical, and holds the key to helping millions of seniors live longer and healthier lives. It's time
for people to stand up for the ethical treatment of seniors and stand up against efforts to delay cures
for seniors."

"I urge the residents of Chandler and its leaders not to be persuaded by the radical campaign being
waged by PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) employees from Norfolk, Va. Their real
goal -- the abolition of all animal research -- would bring to a halt the medical research and
discovery on which all hope for future therapies and cures is based."

"[Without animal testing] the advances in science and medicine that sustain human life would be
severely hindered, if not erased. ... [Animal Testing] can be done safely and humanely and in the best
interest of medical discovery. Chandler City Councilman Bob Caccamo may have articulated it best when he
said, 'I'm an animal lover, but my wife is also a cancer survivor, and if it weren't for things like this
(animal testing) she might not be here.'"

"The 'animal rights' protesters opposing the construction of an animal research facility in Chandler
are engaging in a deadly deception; they are promoting a vicious, anti-human policy, while feigning
benevolent, compassionate motives. The deception takes the form of opposing life-saving medical
research -- in the name of opposing cruelty to animals. ... Animal research is absolutely necessary for
the development of life-saving drugs, medical procedures and biotech treatments. According to Nobel
Laureate Joseph Murray, M.D., 'Animal experimentation has been essential to the development of all
cardiac surgery, transplantation surgery, joint replacements and all vaccinations.' Explains former
American Medical Association President Daniel Johnson, M.D., 'Animal research -- followed by human
clinical study -- is absolutely necessary to find the causes and cures for so many deadly threats,
from AIDS to cancer. Millions of humans would suffer and die unnecessarily if animal testing were
prohibited.'"
